8 steps to become an experienced GTM user

The eight things you must learn once you’re past the basics.

What’s inside?

The eight areas that separate a beginner from someone who excels at Google Tag Manager

Why each one matters inside GTM specifically: where it shows up, and what breaks without it

Where to go deeper on each, so you stop guessing what to search for

This e-book starts where the beginner guides stop

You know how tags, triggers and variables fit together. You can track a form submission and a conversion. You have heard of the data layer and auto-event variables.

So what comes next?

That question is much harder to answer than the first one. Beginner material is everywhere. The path from “I can make GTM work” to “I know why it works” is barely mapped, and most people cross it the way I did: by trial, error, and months of work.

I started using GTM in 2014, when there was almost no information available and no course to take. I spent a long time figuring things out alone, wasting a lot of time.

This e-book is the map I did not have. Eight areas, each one a thing I use constantly, each one a thing that quietly separates a casual GTM user from an experienced one.

This e-book is not for beginners

If you cannot answer these, it is too early for this e-book:

  • Do you know what auto-event tracking is?
  • Do you know what the data layer is?
  • Do you know both ways to enable auto-event listeners in GTM?

A “no” to any of them means the GTM for Beginners e-book is the better place to start. This one assumes roughly six months of real GTM use.
